There's a great buzz about the movie film Lady Bird, starring Irish actress Saoirse Ronan as Christine McPherson, aka Lady Bird, and it has also sparked a big interest for travellers in Sacramento , where it is set. It's written by Greta Gerwig, who pays tribute to her hometown in the critically-acclaimed film, and she has described it in interviews as a love letter to California's capital city.
With that in mind, Visit California has put together a list of some of the key locations showcased so beautifully in the film, so fans of the coming-of-age story can visit them in real life.
Big Blue House
Lady Bird’s favourite house is a real residence in the Fabulous Forties upscale, tree-lined neighbourhood. It's located in the 1200 block of 44th Street in East Sacramento.
Thrift Town
Pivotal mother-daughter scenes with Christine and Marion take place at Thrift Town, 410 El Camino, which is Lady Bird’s preferred shopping destination . This store is where she finds her Thanksgiving and prom dresses.
Tower Bridge
Built in the 1930s, Tower Bridge is Sacramento’s most recognisable landmark, and it appears multiple times in the movie. Spanning over the Sacramento River, the iconic golden bridge serves as the connection between the city and West Sacramento in Yolo County.
American Market and Deli
This corner convenience store at 2331 North N Street is where Lady Bird makes a few “adult” purchases on her 18th birthday. The large-scale mural on the outside wall was painted in 2007 and is one of many colourful paintings throughout Sacramento.
McKinley Rose Garden
Danny and Lady Bird confess their feelings in this 1.5-acre garden in McKinley Park on 3255 H Street. More than 1200 roses line the flower path in the historic attraction, which is the largest rose garden in Sacramento and is named after the late president, William McKinley. The garden is in a city park but the maintenance and management of the Rose Garden is all done by volunteers, the Friends of East Sacramento.
